The kick-off meeting of the new MED Sustainable Tourism Community in Salou (Spain) marked the launch of the second implementation phase of the Interreg MED Horizontal Project.

Launched in November 2019 and led by the Diputació de Barcelona, the renewed Community project, will build on the experience and capitalise the work done in the previous three-year period, counting now on five new territorial cooperation projects.

The kick-off meeting of 3-4 March 2020 brought together representatives of most of the 22 Interreg MED projects dealing with sustainable tourism, involving around 300 organisations including public authorities, universities, NGOs, international organisations and private companies. In addition, the two PANORAMED strategic projects, BEST MED and SMARTMED, approved last October 2019 and focusing on the governance dimension of sustainable tourism, were also represented as part of the same Community.

The event intended to welcome the new projects and start building synergies with closed projects through community-building activities, especially identifying transferring practices implemented by those projects to feed the discussion at Interreg MED Programme level.

In this framework, the CPMR Intermediterranean Commission (IMC) had the pleasure of presenting the main achievements of some current and closed projects where it has been involved (HERIT-DATA, CO-EVOLVE, MITOMED+) as well as the expected results of the recently launched DESTIMED+, WINTERMED and the two strategic projects, BEST MED and SMARTMED. It also fostered synergies and collaborations among these projects.

The second day of the event was dedicated to the presentation of the Community’s capitalisation action plan in view of engaging projects in the process of integrating their results in public policies at different levels to be carried out in the upcoming months. In particular, three parallel workshops were organised in order to reflect on and discuss the results, tools, and targets of the joint capitalisation process. The event closed with a restitution of the workshops’ discussions and a short presentation of the joint strategy and next steps to take.
